The Impact of Education 

During this season of transition, I am reminded of the incredible impact of education on my life and the lives of many New Mexicans. In May and June, we witness kindergarten children, high school seniors and college students finish critical educational milestones. 

When I was young, my parents started talking about these milestones when they set up a college savings account. I remember the light yellow butterfly passbook cover where I kept track of the deposits that were made into my account. Through this account, I learned many things. I learned about the importance of going to college and that there were financial resources being set aside to make that dream a reality. I was also learning financial skills for saving money and math skills about how to track money in my account. When I graduated high school, I knew what my next step would be because of the years of conversations with my family.

Prosperity Works partners with families to plant the seeds for their children that my parents planted with me. Families start the same kind of college savings account with the added benefit that their savings are matched one-to-one. Prosperity Works encourages families to start early to grow their funds over time, helping their children learn the same college going, future focused orientation I received.
